The chiefs, elders and people of the Klikor Traditional Area have formally installed and sworn in Torgbiga Addo IX, Dr Frank Hukporti, as their Paramount Chief. He succeeds the late Torgbiga Addo VIII, who led the traditional area from 1983 until his death on January 14, 2026, at the age of 93. The late chief, who also served as President of the Klikor Traditional Council, was laid to rest on Saturday, October 24, 2026, following traditional funeral rites held during the preceding week.

The formal installation and swearing-in of his successor took place on Sunday, October 25. Building on his predecessor’s legacy In a media engagement ahead of the ceremonies, Torgbiga Addo IX reflected on the legacy of his predecessor, highlighting his contributions to education and community development during his 43-year reign. An educationist who taught at a training college before ascending the stool, Torgbiga Addo VIII made education a central part of his leadership.

Under his reign, basic schools were established in virtually every community within the traditional area. He also championed the establishment of Klikor Secondary Technical School (Klistec), where he served as the first headmaster. Through partnerships with non-governmental organisations and private institutions, he also facilitated the provision of potable water to communities across the area.

Torgbiga Addo IX, a German-trained educationist and distinguished musicologist, has pledged to build on these achievements, with tertiary education among his priorities. He has expressed an ambition to establish a university in Klikor, citing the absence of a university in the Ketu South Municipality. He has also identified the improvement of road networks linking Klikor to neighbouring communities, including Agbozume and Aflao, as an urgent development priority.

Profile of the new Paramount Chief Torgbiga Addo IX is a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and former Director of Bands of the Ghana Police Service. He holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Bayreuth in Germany and is credited with pioneering the concept of “Musical Domestication”. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Brass Band Festival at Klikor-Agbozume and has established himself as an educator, conductor and author.

He maintains institutional links with the German Embassy and the Goethe-Institut in Accra. Vision for Klikor Klikor is one of the oldest Ewe settlements and is historically regarded as a spiritual centre, with several traditional shrines of significance. Its population is predominantly made up of peasant farmers and kente weavers. The new Paramount Chief has outlined a long-term vision of transforming Klikor into a modern city while pursuing UNESCO recognition for its historic shrines as a cultural heritage site.

Several traditional rulers participated in or were acknowledged during the preparations and ceremonies. They included Togbiga Afede XIV of Asogli State in Ho, Torgbiga Tenge Dzokoto VII of Anyako, Togbiga Amenya Fiti V of Aflao, Torgbiga Adamah III of Agbozume, Torgbiga Akpo Ashiakpor VI of Weta and Torgbiga Wenya III of Anlo State. The announcement was issued by the chiefs, elders and people of the Klikor Traditional Area in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
