Edo seals nine Chinese firms over unpaid taxes

The Edo State Internal Revenue Service has sealed nine Chinese-owned firms in Ikpoba-Okha LGA over alleged unpaid tax liabilities totalling N8.9bn.

Nine companies operating in Utesi Community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, have had their industrial premises sealed by the Edo State Internal Revenue Service over alleged unpaid tax liabilities totalling N8.9bn.

The companies, predominantly Chinese-owned, were accused of failing to register their employees for Pay-As-You-Earn tax, file annual employers’ tax returns and deduct and remit PAYE taxes.

The EIRS Head of Corporate Communications and Taxpayers Enlightenment Service, Courage Eboigbe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

Eboigbe said the companies had been formally notified of their established tax liabilities before the enforcement action.

He added that despite repeated reminders and demands for compliance, the companies failed to settle their outstanding obligations, prompting the agency to obtain valid court orders to seal their operational premises.

He said, “The EIRS sealed off the industrial premises of Rongtai Plastic Company Limited and eight other corporate entities operating in the Utesi Community of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, over an unremmitted tax liability totaling N8.982bn.

“The enforcement orders will remain in effect, and the seals will only be removed upon settlement of all outstanding tax liabilities by the defaulting companies,” he added.

Was TrafficTech-GH designed to raise revenue for gov’t? – Fiifi Boafo questions 60% share of fines

Former COCOBOD Director of Public Affairs, Fiifi Boafo, has questioned the government’s decision to take 60 per cent of fines generated under the TrafficTech-GH system, suggesting that the arrangement raises concerns about whether the initiative is intended to improve road safety or generate revenue for the state. Mr Boafo’s concerns centred on the revenue-sharing arrangement under which the private investors behind the project are expected to receive 40 per cent of the penalties collected, while the government takes the remaining 60 per cent.

Traffitech must not become government revenue tool at motorists’ expense – Fiifi Boafo

Former Head of Public Affairs at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Fiifi Boafo, has questioned the financial motive behind the introduction of the new automated traffic enforcement system, Traffitech, warning that it must not become a revenue-generating venture for the government rather than a road safety intervention. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, November 7, Mr Boafo said authorities needed to clarify whether Traffitech was intended to punish traffic offenders, deter motorists from violating road regulations and prevent accidents, or generate revenue for the government.
