Test captain Pat Cummins and fellow quicks Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will be rested during Australia’s upcoming one-day and T20 series against England.

Australia will play three ODIs and five T20 internationals, but Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood were not named in either squad on Monday as the pace trio refresh for a gruelling 10 Tests in 14 weeks this summer.

Key batsmen Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Josh Inglis, Cooper Connolly and all-rounder Cameron Green will be managed through the T20 series following long tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa, as they prepare for four Tests against New Zealand and five in India.

“We are in the middle of a highly demanding phase of our schedule,” said chair of selectors, George Bailey.

“Our multi-format players are transitioning directly from the tour of South Africa into an ODI and T20 series, leaving a narrow window to ensure the squad is physically prepared and fresh for the upcoming New Zealand Test series.

“Then, from when the Test players assemble in Perth through to the conclusion of the 150th anniversary Test against England, the team will have been on the road for more than 100 days.

“To manage this workload, each player’s build-up to the New Zealand series will be carefully planned and focused on individual’s physical and mental preparation.”

Rising WA paceman Mahli Beardman will make his national one-day debut after playing one T20 for Australia.

“Mahli Beardman’s recent performances for Australia A were impressive and we are incredibly excited for his return to the national team across the ODI and T20 formats,” Bailey said.

“We think he can continue to develop into an all-format player across the coming years.”

Jack Edwards was rewarded for an impressive recent tour of South Africa and consistent domestic cricket performance with a place in both squads.

Left-arm quick Spencer Johnson and all-rounder Liam Scott return to the ODI squad. Nathan Ellis has not recovered in time for the ODI series as he returns from a side strain.

The Hobart Hurricanes’ recently crowned Australian T20 player of the year Tim David will spearhead the Twenty20 squad.

Hard-hitting opening batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has won back a place in Australia’s T20 team for the first time since 2025.

And promising young NSW batter Lachlan Shaw joins the T20 squad for the first time, having impressed on the recent Australia A tour to India and in the BBL.

The ODI side continues to build towards Australia’s 2027 World Cup defence in Africa, while the T20 squad has a longer-term goal of the 2028 LA Olympics and T20 World Cup.

ECB forecasting losses of up to £50m in 2027 despite visit of Australia for the Ashes

Concern among counties due to reliance on ECB funding Optimism that eventual figure could be reduced to £35m The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is forecasting losses of tens of millions of pounds next year despite hosting the Ashes, with county executives told last week that the deficit could be as large as £50m. The anticipated shortfall, after posting a profit of £12.6m in 2025, is due to a combination of the cyclical nature of the governing body’s media revenues, which is largely determined by domestic opposition, and a recent decision by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to wi
