The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested some suspected illegal miners at Subin Akwaboaso in the Central Region following an enforcement operation on Sunday, November 1.

In a statement signed by its Spokesperson, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, the Secretariat said its personnel, working alongside members of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), encountered considerable resistance from a group of individuals during the operation, some of whom were wielding cutlasses, firearms and other offensive weapons.

The statement said the resistance created considerable risks for the enforcement personnel and others present at the scene.

It added that despite the obstruction, the enforcement team, under the direction of the Director of Operations of NAIMOS, Colonel K. S. Appiah, exercised maximum restraint and took decisive measures to prevent the situation from escalating.

“Considering the obstruction encountered, NAIMOS wishes to reiterate that any obstruction of lawful enforcement is a serious concern,” the statement said.

The Secretariat warned that individuals suspected of attacking its personnel or obstructing its operations would be referred to the relevant authorities for the necessary action.

It also assured the public that its enforcement activities would continue to be conducted within the law, with the necessary restraint and proportionate measures to protect its personnel, accompanying journalists and members of the public.

“[NAIMOS] will continue to act within the law, exercising restraint and taking necessary and proportionate measures to protect personnel, accompanying journalists and members of the public during the discharge of its duties,” the statement added.

The Secretariat urged community leaders and residents to support its lawful operations and channel any concerns through the appropriate channels.

“Community leaders and residents are therefore urged to support lawful operations and raise any concerns through appropriate channels,” it said.

NAIMOS further reaffirmed its commitment to tackling illegal mining and protecting the environment, indicating that it would continue to work with relevant security agencies, regulatory institutions and communities.

“With the support of the Government and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, NAIMOS will continue to work with relevant security agencies, regulatory institutions and communities to protect the environment and consolidate operational gains,” the statement said.
