The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s U-17 Women’s National Team, the Flamingos, to win the ongoing competition and return home with the trophy.

Shaibu, who said he followed the team’s preparations ahead of their departure, disclosed that he was encouraged by what he observed during their training sessions. He added that he was familiar with some of the players and had personally identified a few of them.

He said his confidence was further strengthened by the final squad selected by the technical crew, commending the team’s approach of taking each match as it comes.

According to him, every match requires a different level of preparation, programme and attitude, stressing that the ability of the players to understand and implement the technical team’s instructions would be crucial to their success.

The former professional footballer noted that the pathway to winning the trophy lies in maintaining focus, discipline and determination rather than looking too far ahead.

He expressed optimism that the team’s seven-game strategy would produce the desired result, adding that their performances in the opening matches had further reinforced his belief in their ability to emerge champions.

Urging Nigerians to remain supportive and expectant, Shaibu said the Flamingos had what it takes to overcome their remaining opponents.

“We should have butterflies in our stomachs because all the Asian teams have fallen. The Americans are next,” he said, expressing confidence that the Nigerian side would ultimately bring home the trophy.

He urged the players to sustain their impressive form and remain committed to the task ahead as they pursue the ultimate prize.
