The Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) says it has returned to profitability, recording a profit of US$1.3 million on the back of US$103.5 million in revenue as of September 2026.

Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robert Makila Sambian, says the performance marks a significant turnaround after years of financial difficulties, following a strategic reset of the company.

Speaking at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ Progress Report presentation, Dr. Sambian attributed the improvement to changes in human resource behaviour, operational reforms and a renewed focus on efficiency.

He described the financial performance as a major milestone in efforts to restore the fortunes of the state-owned aluminium producer.

Dr. Sambian said VALCO has also aligned its operations with President John Mahama’s 24-hour economy initiative, introducing a schedule of one job, four shifts and four workers to support round-the-clock production.

He, however, acknowledged that more work and investment are required to sustain the gains and fully restore the company’s operations.

He disclosed that VALCO is engaging strategic investors to mobilise the needed capital, with a long-term ambition of increasing production to 1.5 million metric tonnes over the next 10 years.

The CEO says the company remains committed to strengthening its operations and reclaiming its position as a major player in Ghana’s industrial development.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) is warning that Ghana’s weak domestic revenue mobilisation is undermining the country’s capacity to finance critical infrastructure, improve public sector wages and accelerate national development. Dr Boakye argues that Ghana is not maximising the financial benefits from its mineral resources, particularly when compared with countries such as Botswana, where government has significant involvement in the mining sector and benefits from royalties and dividends.
