The police in Imo State have confirmed the death of Chiamaka Chukwuokore, a 17-year-old girl who was pushed from a two-storey building in the state.

The police spokesperson in Imo State, Henry Okoye, announced this in a statement on Wednesday.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that a 26-year-old man, Ifeanyi Chukwu, allegedly pushed the teenager from the building on Sunday.

The incident happened on Sunday in Owerri, the state capital.

The police arrested the suspect, saying the victim was a niece of the suspect’s unnamed girlfriend.

Mr Okoye, a deputy superintendent of police, said in a Monday statement that the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, although her condition remained critical.

In the Wednesday statement, the police spokesperson said the victim died in the hospital on Tuesday evening, two days after the incident.

“The victim, who sustained serious injuries from the incident on 1st November, 2026, was rushed to a hospital for medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries in the evening of November 3, 2026, while receiving treatment,” he said.

Mr Okoye said following the victim’s death, the suspect now faces a murder charge.

“He (suspect) remains in police custody as investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served,” he said.

The spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Bosso, has commiserated with the family of the deceased.

Mr Bosso assured residents of Imo State that the police had begun “a thorough investigation” into the incident.

The commissioner urged the residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and allow the police to carry out their duties professionally.
