A chancellor’s act of generosity gives Nsukka and its environs a new centre for quality healthcare

Some buildings are constructed to be hospitals. This one began as a home.

On Monday, 2nd November 2026, Maduka University Teaching Hospital, Nsukka, commenced full operation at 37 Orba Road, Amukwa, Nsukka.

The building that now receives patients is the former personal residence of Dr Samuel Maduka Onyishi, MON, Chancellor and owner of Maduka University. He chose to convert his own home into a teaching hospital for the benefit of the community.

A private residence is the most personal space a person owns. It is where families gather, where memories are made, and where a lifetime of effort finds its comfort. Dr Onyishi gave that up so that others might have access to care.

The decision reflects a humanitarian heart.

Many people of means invest in properties and businesses.

Fewer give up their own home for the sake of strangers who are sick, anxious, or in need. The spacious, elegant structure, with its rounded façade, arched windows and shaded balconies, was built for private comfort. It now serves the common good, with the hospital’s own motto, “Service to Humanity,” as its guiding principle.

This is the spirit of the new hospital, and it shows in the message the hospital has chosen to share with the public: “We look forward to serving you and your loved ones with quality, affordable and accessible healthcare services.”

The community did not wait long to respond. When the hospital opened on Monday, 2nd November 2026, the first person to be registered as a patient was Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi (SMO), who left Ekwegbe very early that morning for Nsukka with two goals in mind: to be the number one patient to register at Maduka University Teaching Hospital, and to be the first member of the public to patronise it. He achieved both, and says he is happy that he did.

Mr Anslem Ugwu was the second patient registered that day. SMO paid the registration and consultation fees for both of them, so the hospital’s first two patients began their care with an act of kindness between fellow patients.

It is a fitting beginning. A home given up for the community received its very first visitors from the community, and one of them travelled from Ekwegbe very early in the morning to be among the first to benefit.

Nsukka is a university town and a gateway for many surrounding communities. Residents here, like many Nigerians, know the burden of travelling long distances for specialised care, of overcrowded facilities, and of delays that can turn a manageable illness into a crisis.

A fully operational teaching hospital in Amukwa brings care closer to home. Families will have a dependable place to turn to for everyday medical needs and for emergencies, without having to travel far from their loved ones. The word accessible in the hospital’s pledge matters a great deal to people who have had to weigh the cost and distance of seeking treatment.

Maduka University Teaching Hospital stands on three commitments: Quality Healthcare, Teaching, and Service to Humanity.

Together they describe an institution that will treat patients while also training the next generation of Nigerian healthcare professionals.

Each trained professional carries the benefit far beyond Nsukka, into hospitals and communities across the country.

From its first day, the hospital offers a broad range of services:

* Outpatient Clinic Services: consultations and care for patients who do not need admission

* Inpatient Services: admission and round-the-clock care for patients who need extended treatment

* Laboratory Services: diagnostic testing to support accurate, timely treatment

* Radiology Services: imaging to help clinicians see and understand what is wrong

* Maternity and Child Health: dedicated care for mothers, newborns and children

* Emergency Services: rapid response when every minute counts

* Pharmacy Services: medications available within the facility

The hospital’s tagline, “Your Health, Our Priority,” is a promise the team intends to keep every day, starting from the first. The institution’s closing words capture its aim: “Together for a Healthier Community.”

Maduka University Teaching Hospital, Nsukka commenced full operation on Monday, 2nd November 2026.

The management invites the general public to come and experience a hospital that began with an act of generosity and is built on service to humanity.
