The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a 30-year-old IT engineer from Bengaluru for allegedly making threatening calls and sending emails to several people in Mumbai, including Bollywood actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Tusshar Kapoor. The arrest was reported on November 4.

The accused, identified as Vaibhav Mishra, was traced to Bengaluru after police tracked the IP address allegedly used to send the threatening emails. He is scheduled to be produced before a court on November 5.

According to police sources, Mr. Mishra had allegedly been threatening several film personalities in Mumbai through different means over the past few days. Mr. Khurrana and Mr. Kapoor were among those who reportedly received threatening emails.

Reports suggest that investigators suspect artificial intelligence (AI) may have been used to generate voice samples resembling those of an alleged gang member. However, no forensic report confirming the use of AI has been made public.

Mumbai Police have clarified that Mr. Mishra has no connection with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

The Crime Branch is investigating the motive behind the threats, the nature of the alleged extortion demands and whether more individuals were targeted. Further investigation is underway.
