‘I do not know the actual details’ – Agalga on allegations against detained Frimpong

Majority Leader James Agalga says he does not know the precise allegations against detained Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, despite receiving a formal briefing on his case.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, the NDC leader said he intended to visit his NPP colleague to obtain firsthand information.

“I do not know the actual details. In fact, when the pressures of work ease a bit, I intend to pay him a visit.”

His response followed a question about the type of alleged scam behind the MP’s detention in the Netherlands.

Mr Agalga acknowledged that the allegations concerned suspected scams. He stressed, however, that Frimpong remained innocent until proven guilty.

He said the court proceedings concerned extradition to the United States, where the alleged offences occurred.

Frimpong was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026, following a US extradition request. The case has been linked to allegations of romance scams and money laundering. He has not been convicted.

Two attempts to secure bail have failed. Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor said on November 3 that Frimpong remained in Dutch custody. His extradition hearing is scheduled for November 18, 2026.

Parliament has engaged Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has also confirmed consular assistance, including a visit to the detained MP.

On PM Express, Agalga said Ghana’s mission in Brussels was assisting Frimpong. He welcomed that support and expressed hope that the court applications would succeed.

He also rejected calls to declare the MP’s seat vacant.

“No, we can't do that. He's not been convicted. If you declare the seat vacant and the courts clear him, what happens?”

Agalga said MPs agreed they must respect their colleague’s presumption of innocence.

“Yes, we have to respect his rights. To do otherwise would amount to a violation of his rights.”

He said that principle was enshrined in the Constitution.
