Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park calls for Independence Declaration photo on selected banknotes

The Management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to replace the image of the Big Six on selected banknote denominations with the historic photograph of Ghana’s independence declaration on March 6, 1957. It said the proposal is consistent with the Bank of Ghana’s planned introduction of a Heritage Series of banknotes, which would provide an opportunity to celebrate significant personalities, events and milestones in the country’s national history.
The Management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to replace the image of the Big Six on selected banknote denominations with the historic photograph of Ghana’s independence declaration on March 6, 1957.
The proposal is aimed at broadening the historical representation on the country’s currency by recognising other defining moments in Ghana’s history, while preserving the significance of the Big Six in the independence struggle.
In a press release issued on Friday, November 6, the Park said the Big Six image currently features on almost all Ghanaian banknotes but argued that the country's currency should also reflect other important milestones in its history.
It maintained that banknotes are more than a medium of exchange, describing them as important symbols of national identity, heritage, pride and collective memory.
The Management is therefore proposing that the iconic photograph capturing Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring Ghana’s independence be featured on selected denominations.
It said the proposal is consistent with the Bank of Ghana’s planned introduction of a Heritage Series of banknotes, which would provide an opportunity to celebrate significant personalities, events and milestones in the country's national history.
According to the Park, the photograph captures the culmination of Ghana’s independence struggle and the historic moment the country broke free from colonial rule.
It described the event as a defining turning point in Ghana’s history and a landmark in the wider African liberation struggle, representing the country's freedom, sovereignty and national identity.
The Management believes featuring the photograph on selected banknotes would be particularly significant as Ghana prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of its independence in 2027.
It said the move would serve as a fitting and enduring tribute to the historic moment that gave birth to the nation.
