JSP candidate dies before vote counting, wins MPTC seat in East Godavari district
The 28-year-old woman died due to cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at private hospital after complaining of chest pain
Jana Sena Party (JSP) MPTC candidate Garapati Divya, who died of cardiac arrest a few hours before vote counting, registered a victory with a majority of 361 votes at Damanthunigidem panchayat of Devarapalli mandal in East Godavari district.
The 28-year-old was admitted to a private hospital immediately on Friday evening after she complained of chest pain. By Friday night, she was declared dead due to cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment.
The JSP candidate secured 969 votes, while her rival, G. Dhanalakshmi of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), received 608 votes.
A pall of gloom descended on her panchayat as the death left her supporters in shock. Ms. Divya’s last rites were performed while the counting of the votes was in progress. Scores of Jana Sena supporters joined in Ms. Divya’s last rites.
