New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held consultations with the leadership of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) on policy proposals to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system.

The discussions covered the proposed establishment of a dedicated regulatory council for medical laboratory science, financial clearance for the recruitment of health professionals, local production of laboratory reagents, stronger disease surveillance systems and strategic partnerships with the private sector.

Dr Bawumia said the engagement provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on challenges facing the health sector and explore practical measures to improve healthcare delivery.

Medical laboratory services play a central role in disease diagnosis, treatment decisions and the detection of public health threats. Improving staffing, access to laboratory supplies and professional regulation could therefore affect the quality and reliability of services across the country.

The proposed local production of laboratory reagents also featured among the issues discussed, amid the broader need to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on imported diagnostic supplies.

Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude to GAMLS leadership and members for sharing their perspectives, reiterating his commitment to developing policies informed by stakeholder engagement and the experiences of Ghanaians.

The consultation forms part of his engagements with professional groups on priorities for the country’s healthcare sector.

The proposals would require further policy development, including details on the proposed regulatory council, recruitment arrangements and measures to support local reagent production.

For medical laboratory scientists, the issues extend beyond professional regulation and working conditions to the wider capacity of Ghana’s health system to deliver accurate diagnoses, monitor disease outbreaks and respond to emerging public health threats.
