Government renews commitment to unravel Ahmed Suale’s murder – Kwakye Ofosu

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said journalists in Ghana had lost their lives in the pursuit of accountability. Ahmed Suale was shot dead in Madina, Accra, in January 2019.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to unraveling the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, whose killing in January 2019 remains unsolved.

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said journalists in Ghana had lost their lives in the pursuit of accountability.

He cited the killing of Mr Suale, an investigative journalist with Tiger Eye PI, and said the government remained committed to finding those responsible.

“Journalists in our country lost their lives in pursuit of accountability, and I refer to the unfortunate killing of Ahmed Suale, whose murder remains unsolved, and the government remains committed to unraveling it,” he stated.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu also acknowledged the dangers faced by journalists who publish reports considered uncomfortable by powerful interests.

He referred to journalists in the northern part of the country who, he said, had to flee for their lives after publishing such reports.

“Our words in support of free speech must not ring hollow, especially when in the north, through the past, journalists had to flee our country for fear of their lives because they published uncomfortable truths,” he stated.

Ahmed Suale was shot dead in Madina, Accra, in January 2019. He was part of the Tiger Eye PI investigative team and had worked on investigations into corruption and other matters of public interest.

His killing remains unresolved, with the GJA and other media stakeholders continuing to call for justice.

The government's latest pledge comes amid broader concerns about journalist safety and the need to protect media practitioners from intimidation and attacks.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the government remained committed to pursuing the circumstances surrounding Suale's murder and protecting journalists across the country.
