In a breakthrough for Nigeria’s healthcare sector, the Federal Government has adopted the newly inaugurated Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) Robotic Surgery Academy as the nation’s 29th TETFund Centre of Excellence, guaranteeing full scholarship coverage for all enrolled trainees. Speaking at the official inauguration on Thursday, Minister of Education Dr.

Tunji Alausa declared that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) will fully fund the tuition fees of qualified medical professionals undergoing specialist training at the academy through its local scholarship scheme. The strategic partnership — established alongside RoboMed Global, the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), and Redeemer’s University — establishes Nigeria’s pioneer institute for advanced robotic and telesurgical operations. ₦250bn Healthcare Injection Highlighting the government’s drive to curb brain drain and eliminate foreign medical tourism, Alausa disclosed that the Federal Government has injected over ₦250 billion into medical education across the last two years.

“The same number of medical students admitted while I was in medical school is the same number we have maintained over the years, without sufficient consideration of our population growth,” the minister stated, confirming plans to expand annual medical programme enrolments to 20,000 within two years. By designating RHV as a Special Centre of Excellence, TETFund sponsorship will ensure that financial barriers do not stop top clinical talent from acquiring cutting-edge surgical skills locally. $4m Infrastructure The newly launched academy hits the ground running with $4 million worth of dual robotic surgical systems, designed to power both clinical service delivery and high-level training.

According to RHV Chief Executive Officer Adedamola Dada, the academy aims to produce 400 certified specialists within two years across three main specialties: Urology, General Surgery, and Gynaecology. The academy’s scope extends beyond doctors to train an entire technical ecosystem, including operating theatre personnel, biomedical engineers, and hospital administrators.

RHV also recently achieved full accreditation as an academic medical school. Co-founder of RoboMed Global, Dr. Obi Ekwenna, emphasised that the academy relies on a total-ecosystem training model inspired by aviation safety standards prioritizing communication, simulation, and strict team coordination. “The essence of the academy is to train the entire ecosystem, not just surgeons alone,” Ekwenna noted, explaining that candidate evaluation will blend advanced simulation, supervised clinical practice, and structured patient care.

Institutional Backing, Local Accreditation The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) will oversee the academic standards and award official postgraduate fellowship diplomas upon completion, while Redeemer’s University will lead specialised training for nursing teams and biomedical maintenance engineers. Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Prof.

Shadrach Akindele, and NPMCN President Prof. Anthony Ikefuna both hailed the project as a decisive milestone. Following RHV’s landmark execution of Nigeria’s first robotic and telesurgical procedures in September, the academy is positioned to establish West Africa as a regional hub for technology-driven patient care. Redeemer’s Health Village is a faith-based tertiary medical facility established by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
