GRIDCo completes 70% of Anwomaso–Ahodwo line upgrade; planned outages to begin Friday

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has completed 70% of the upgrade of the 161kV Anwomaso–Ahodwo transmission line in Kumasi, with planned power interruptions expected in some communities as engineers work to finish the remaining tasks. GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) say the outstanding work involves stringing conductors on transmission towers.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has completed 70% of the upgrade of the 161kV Anwomaso–Ahodwo transmission line in Kumasi, with planned power interruptions expected in some communities as engineers work to finish the remaining tasks.

The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026, is aimed at improving electricity supply reliability in Kumasi and surrounding communities.

GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) say the outstanding work involves stringing conductors on transmission towers. The two companies say temporary outages are necessary to enable engineers to carry out the work safely and complete the project.

The planned interruptions will run from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 29, excluding weekends. Power will be interrupted between 9am and 5pm on days when work is being undertaken along the affected sections of the transmission line.

ECG is expected to publish a detailed schedule to inform customers in the affected communities about the specific dates of the outages.

In a joint statement issued in Tema on October 29, the two power companies said the temporary interruptions were necessary to protect engineers, other personnel and the public during the remaining works.

“While the temporary interruptions are necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and the successful completion of the works, the project represents an important investment in strengthening the transmission network and improving the reliability of electricity supply in the Ashanti Region,” the statement said.

GRIDCo and ECG appealed to residents and other electricity consumers in the affected areas to exercise patience and cooperate with the teams carrying out the upgrade.

“We appeal to the public, particularly affected communities, for your patience, understanding, and cooperation throughout this period,” the companies said, apologising for the inconvenience and assuring the public of their commitment to completing the project safely and on schedule.
