Trump grants visa for mother of Ghanaian boy killed in NYC — Mamdani

Javits Frimpong was killed on his way to school in the Bronx.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Saturday that US President Donald Trump had agreed to grant a visa to the mother of a 15-year-old boy who was killed in a neighborhood in Bronx earlier this week.

Javits Frimpong moved to New York from Ghana last year to be with his father and begin a new life in the US, according to Representative Ritchie Torres, a Democrat from the Bronx.

Frimpong was shot in the abdomen on Thursday morning on his way to school and later died in the hospital, according to New York City police.

There have been no arrests in the case so far, with police investigating the shooting.

"I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately," Mamdani posted on X.

"The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away," he wrote. "Javits Frimpong's mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person."

The killing led to an outpouring of grief in New York, with Torres writing, "Our entire borough is mourning a young man who should have had his whole future ahead of him."

The White House is yet to comment on the Trump-Mamdani phone call.

Thomas Frimpong remembered his son as a quiet boy and said he was bullied in school by two boys.

Ghana's Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa also thanked Mamdani and Trump in a post on X.

He said Ghanaian officials were coordinating with Javits Frimpong's mother to assist her with the visa application process.
