Mahama sets monthly review of road crash data to measure TraffiTech results

He said accident data recorded after the system became operational on November 1, 2026, would be compared with figures from the corresponding months last year to establish its impact.
Addressing a meet-the-press session at Jubilee House on Thursday, November 5, the President appealed to motorists to observe speed limits, particularly the 50-kilometre-per-hour limit in urban centres, as the government steps up automated traffic enforcement.
Mr Mahama said the technology was intended to improve compliance by replacing manual speed checks by police officers with an automated system that detects speeding and provides evidence of offences.
He expressed confidence that the intervention would help reduce road fatalities, citing 2,151 people killed in road crashes in Ghana last year. Of that number, 474 were pedestrians knocked down by vehicles, with schoolchildren returning from school accounting for a significant proportion of the deaths.
The President said excessive speed makes it difficult for drivers to respond quickly when pedestrians cross roads unexpectedly, increasing the likelihood of fatal collisions.
“I can assure you, if we bear with this TraffiTech system, when you see the results of reduction in accidents at the end of the year, because it started November 1st, we’ll do a month-to-month comparison with last year,” he said.
“And you yourself will be surprised at the number of lives this TraffiTech system will save.”
He reiterated that motorists in urban areas, including Accra, must not exceed 50 kilometres per hour, adding: “The general speed limit in any urban centre, including Accra, is 50. And so you are not supposed to go above 50.”
Mr Mahama also clarified that the speeding detection component is the only part of the TraffiTech system currently in operation.
