President John Dramani Mahama has mentioned that Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations in 2027 will span several days. Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary will mark seven decades since the country gained independence from British colonial rule on 6 March 1957.

President John Dramani Mahama has mentioned that Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations in 2027 will span several days.

In a recent press briefing, he said the anniversary celebration will have several world leaders in attendance to mark the historic milestone.

He noted that Ghana’s status as the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule has generated international interest, with several world leaders expressing a desire to participate in the celebrations.

“The 70th anniversary is a very important event, and we’ve started planning towards it. Many world leaders have expressed a wish to come because of Ghana’s prominence as the first to break away from colonialism. So, we expect a lot of heads of state to join us for the celebration,” he said.

President Mahama noted that the anniversary planning committee is yet to present its report on the proposed format of the celebrations. However, he indicated that activities would extend beyond 6 March 2027.

“It’s not just going to be a day’s event. I’m sure it will be a celebration over a period, with many activities leading up to the event and even after it,” he further indicated.

The programme is expected to feature cultural activities and exhibitions showcasing Ghana’s journey since independence, including its achievements and setbacks.

“We’ve had our setbacks, but we’ve also had successes, and so we need to showcase all that,” he added.

As part of preparations, the President also outlined plans to improve the appearance of Accra and other regional capitals through road rehabilitation, landscaping and other urban renewal works.

He said ongoing works in Accra include road repairs and re-marking, fixing damaged pavements and landscaping to give the capital a facelift.

Similar improvement works are expected in regional capitals, including the rehabilitation of selected road networks to enhance their appearance ahead of the anniversary.
