Sharmila hails Congress performance in Chirala civic polls
Party wins 10 of 44 councillor seats; APCC chief urges elected members to act as an effective Opposition
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila has congratulated former MLA and senior Congress leader Amanchi Krishna Mohan on the party’s performance in the Chirala Municipality elections, in which it won 10 of the 44 councillor seats.
In a statement, Ms. Sharmila praised Mr. Krishna Mohan, who is also the Bapatla District Congress Committee president and a member of the State Political Affairs Committee (PAC), for his efforts to strengthen the party in Chirala. The Congress contested 42 wards and secured second place in several others.
Describing the party’s performance as a moral victory, Ms. Sharmila said the results demonstrated the Congress’s potential to emerge as a political alternative, despite failing to capture control of the municipality. She thanked voters, party workers and elected councillors for their support and urged the newly elected councillors to function as an effective Opposition by consistently raising public issues and holding the ruling alliance accountable.
The Chirala Municipality elections were part of the 2026 Andhra Pradesh urban local body polls. Polling was held on November 1, while counting took place on November 6 after being postponed due to adverse weather conditions caused by Cyclone Murasu.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) emerged as the single largest party with 22 seats, followed by the Congress with 10 and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) with eight. The Jana Sena Party won two seats, while the BJP and an Independent candidate secured one seat each. The TDP-led alliance secured 25 seats and retained control of the municipality. TDP candidate Yericharla Honey Spandana was elected municipal chairperson.
