Jamia university orders student union polls within 15 days of constitution approval; two students continue hunger strike

With no assurances on resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and the Chief Proctor, two students are continuing their hunger strike

Security personnel keep vigil as students protest inside Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi on October 25, 2026.

Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday (October 26, 2026) ordered that students’ union elections be held within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution. However, with no assurances on resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and the Chief Proctor, two students are continuing their hunger strike.

As per the official order, the university revoked suspension and show-cause notices issued to students during the ongoing protest, while also asking students to apologise for any defamatory remarks made against the administration.

The order, issued by Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, also provides for the constitution of a committee to inquire into the conduct of security staff during the protest period.

Students of the university have been protesting since October 11 for restoration of their union. The situation turned tense a day earlier on Sunday (October 25, 2026) as attempts were made to forcibly remove the protesting students. With classes suspended, water facilities on the campus were cut off and no entry or exit was allowed. Amid heavy police deployment, students still gathered in large numbers and staged a protest.
