NPP-aligned group calls for independent investigation into Obuasi SHTS headmaster allegations

An NPP-aligned group in the Ashanti Region has called for an independent investigation into allegations of misconduct involving the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High School, Zakaria Abdulai, citing concerns about student safety and the credibility of the inquiry. It also referred to reports that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service had directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr William Kwame Amankra, and the Obuasi East Director of Education, Mr Nketia, to step aside to facilitate an effective investigation.

An NPP-aligned group in the Ashanti Region has called for an independent investigation into allegations of misconduct involving the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High School, Zakaria Abdulai, citing concerns about student safety and the credibility of the inquiry.

The group is also urging the Ghana Police Service to investigate possible criminal offences, preserve relevant evidence and protect students and witnesses from intimidation.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 23, 2026, and signed by its Regional Coordinator, Kwabena Nsenkyire, the group condemned the alleged misconduct and called for accountability if the allegations are substantiated.

The concerns follow an undercover investigation by Multimedia Group journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni which, according to the group, has raised questions about allegations against the headmaster, a reported attack on him by students and subsequent unrest on the school campus.

The group said the matter must be treated with urgency, stressing that schools should remain safe environments where students can pursue their education without fear of abuse, exploitation or intimidation.

The group has called for a review of the preliminary investigation committee, including the recusal of any member whose involvement could create an actual or perceived conflict of interest.

It also referred to reports that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service had directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr William Kwame Amankra, and the Obuasi East Director of Education, Mr Nketia, to step aside to facilitate an effective investigation.

The group wants an independent investigative team to examine the facts and review preliminary findings to ensure the process is transparent, impartial and free from undue influence.

It has further urged the police to conduct a prompt criminal investigation and take appropriate legal action where the evidence and applicable legal requirements justify it.

The group said relevant evidence must be preserved, witnesses protected against intimidation and affected students provided with appropriate support, while their privacy and dignity are respected.

The group has accused unnamed figures within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of potentially seeking to shield the headmaster because of alleged political affiliations.

It has called on the NDC leadership in the Ashanti Region to demonstrate publicly that party loyalty will not take precedence over accountability.

However, the group’s claims of potential political interference have not been independently established.

It also stressed that the headmaster must not be presumed guilty before the allegations are examined through due process.

According to the statement, accountability must extend to anyone found to have committed misconduct or obstructed justice, regardless of political affiliation or position.

The group has urged relevant authorities to provide regular public updates on the investigation, provided the disclosures do not compromise student privacy, witness confidentiality or the integrity of the process.

It warned that attempts by political figures to influence the inquiry could undermine public confidence and deny affected students justice.

The group said the immediate priority should be to establish the facts, protect students and ensure the investigation proceeds without fear, favour or political interference.
