2027 Budget to highlight inflation drop, economic progress – Agalga

Majority Leader in Parliament, James Agalga, says the 2027 Budget will provide an opportunity for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to showcase what it considers its economic achievements during its first two years in office. Mr Agalga described the budget debate as one of the key items expected to occupy the House during the coming weeks.

Majority Leader in Parliament, James Agalga, says the 2027 Budget will provide an opportunity for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to showcase what it considers its economic achievements during its first two years in office.

He said the debate on the government's financial statement would highlight improvements in key economic indicators, including inflation and food prices.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of Parliament's resumption on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Mr Agalga cited the reduction in inflation from 53 per cent to 5.3 per cent as one of the major developments the government would present to Parliament.

“You will get to understand how we managed to bring inflation down from 53%, which was unprecedented at the time, to a single digit. Now, we are talking about 5.3%. You will get to understand how we achieved those monumental results,” he said.

He added that the government would also use the budget debate to highlight the decline in food inflation.

“You would also get to understand how we have managed to bring down food inflation considerably like never before. And so, this would be an interesting debate,” he said.

Mr Agalga also pointed to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) assessment of Ghana's economic management, arguing that it had acknowledged the government's progress.

He contrasted the current administration's record with that of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, which he accused of mismanaging the economy.

“Even the IMF clearly has very good and charitable words to say about how well we have managed the economy, which was grossly mismanaged under the erstwhile NPP government to the extent that people suffered haircuts,” he said.

He added that the economic difficulties experienced under the previous administration remained fresh in the minds of Ghanaians.

The 2027 Budget is expected to be presented by the Finance Minister on November 12, 2026.

Parliament will subsequently debate the financial statement and consider the Appropriation Bill before adjourning for the Christmas break.

Mr Agalga described the budget debate as one of the key items expected to occupy the House during the coming weeks.
